Weight Loss

Lose weight. They’re two of the words we least like to hear. For some of it’s easy and for others it’s hard. Perhaps you want to lose weight for a special occasion, or you may want to lose weight to look your best. Whatever the motivation, the process can be challenging. Weight loss is much more complex than calories consumed versus calories burned. There are many other factors that affect your ability to lose weight effectively.

Trying Something New

You may have tried various approaches to lose weight. Counting calories, macros, carbs, or grams of protein while increasing exercise may be part of your weight loss plan. For some people those approaches alone will facilitate weight loss, while others will try everything and still be unable to lose the weight they seek to. In that case, they have to try something new.

Medically Assisted Weight Loss

You’ve probably heard about weight loss medications. They’re one of the newest tools to use in the fight against obesity. Semaglutide, one of the medications prescribed for weight loss, is a highly effective option. One recent study found that semaglutide is more effective for weight loss than liraglutide, another popular weight loss medication. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists, also referred to as a GLP-1 agonist.

GLP-1 agonists work similarly to the hormone GLP-1 which is made naturally by our small intestines. The hormone GLP-1 works to:

  • Tell your body to release insulin
  • Ensure your body doesn’t secrete too much insulin
  • Help manage your blood sugar
  • Help you feel more full
  • Delay your stomach emptying, making you feel full longer

GLP-1 also helps manage a hormone called glucagon. Glucagon’s function is to increase the amount of sugar secreted into your bloodstream. GLP-1 agonists work against that, preventing too much sugar from entering your bloodstream.

What to Expect From Semaglutide

Semaglutide is quite effective in assisting people lose weight and to lose it more quickly than they would without it. One study, which followed patients over a two-year period of time, found that users of semaglutide lost 12.6% more weight than their counterparts who received placebos, even though they ate similar diets and had similar exercise routines.

Semaglutide was approved by the FDA in 2021. As part of that approval, the FDA noted the most common side effects of semaglutide, including:

  • Incidents of low blood sugar
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Heartburn

While some gastrointestinal distress is a common side effect, it’s possible to begin with a low dosage of semaglutide and work your way up to the recommended dosage over several weeks. Patients have found that protocol effective in managing GI discomfort.

It’s also important to remember that the benefits of weight loss on your health, both physical and mental, far outweigh the side effects experienced by most people.
