They’re the latest and greatest tool in the fight against obesity. Although they were initially approved to manage type 2 diabetes, they’ve been found to positively impact other health conditions including weight loss, too. ## What They Are Ozempic is the brand name for semaglutide. [It was approved](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-approvals-and-databases/drug-trial-snapshot-ozempic) for use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes in 2017. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, which was [approved as treatment for type 2 diabetes in 2022](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-approvals-and-databases/drug-trials-snapshots-mounjaro).  Both medications have been found to be effective for weight loss, too, and they’ve changed the way medical professionals and the general public views weight and weight management. Both medications are GLP-1 receptors agonists. GLP-1 receptor agonists, or [GLP-1 agonists](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK551568/), derive their name from a hormone whose functions they mimic. This hormone, alternatively recognized as glucagon-like peptide 1, plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels within the body. Following a meal, GLP-1 hormone signals the body’s need for increased insulin to counteract the surge in blood sugar levels. This hormone, acting as a chemical messenger, effectively maintains the body’s blood sugar balance. Tirzepatide functions as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, but it also engages another receptor, GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). Apart from assisting in appetite regulation via the GIP pathway, tirzepatide also slows the digestion process, triggering the release of another hormone that prolongs the sensation of fullness. This allows the user to eat less because they’re hungry less frequently. ## How They’re Different Ozempic helps to manage blood sugar and effect weight loss. It also has other benefits that tirzepatide (Mounjaro) doesn’t. [Ozempic can be effective in](https://professional.heart.org/en/meetings/scientific-sessions/science-news-2023#select): - Offering protection against heart attacks - Providing some protection against stroke - Managing overall cardiovascular health It plays an effective role in cardiovascular protection for people who are overweight but don’t have type 2 diabetes and those who are [overweight or obese and do have type 2 diabetes](https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmoa1607141). Mounjaro, on the other hand, hasn’t yet been proven to have the same cardiovascular benefits, but it increases the body’s sensitivity to recognizing and using insulin. It also appears to be more effective for those engaged in weight loss. In recent trials, participants who received [tirzepatide lost an average of 25.3% of their body weight](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38078870/). ## Possible Side Effects Both medications have changed the way we view weight loss and users report remarkable results. As we know, all medications have potential side effects.
